Saint Francis Pledge
I PLEDGE/ WE PLEDGE
One of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching is Care for God's Creation. This principle states "There is inherent integrity to all of creation; it requires careful stewardship of all resources and their just distribution now and for future generations."
The United States is just beginning to experience the lack of water in the south western states because of drought. Wild fires have consumed countless acres of land in the west. Coastal states have experienced rising waters and hurricanes. Like our neighbors around the world, the lack of water is becoming a problem. It is best then for all of us to learn to be careful stewards of the resources God has given us.
THE SAINT FRANCIS PLEDGE IN COOPERATION WITH CATHOLIC COALITION ON CLIMATE CHANGE
All across the country, Catholics are taking the St. Francis Pledge to Care for Creation and the poor and joining the Catholic Climate Covenant. The St Francis Pledge is a promise and a commitment by Catholic individuals, families, parishes, organizations and institutions to live our faith by protecting God's Creation and advocating on behalf of people all over the world who face the harshest impacts of global climate change. To join the covenant, you commit to act on each of the five elements of the St Francis Pledge.
I / WE PLEDGE TO:
PRAY AND REFLECT ON THE DUTY TO CARE FOR GOD'S CREATION AND PROTECT THE POOR AND VULNERABLE.
LEARN ABOUT AND EDUCATE OTHERS ON THE CAUSES AND MORAL DIMENSIONS OF CLIMATE CHANGE.
ASSESS HOW WE AS INDIVIDUALS AND IN OUR FAMILIES, PARISHES AND OTHER AFFILIATIONS CONTRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE BY OUR OWN ENERGY USE, COMSUMPTION, WASTE, ETC.
ACT TO CHANGE OUR CHOICES AND BEHAVIORS TO REDUCE THE WAYS WE CONTRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE
ADVOCATE FOR CATHOLIC PRINCIPLES AND PRIORITIES IN CLIMATE CHANGE DISCUSSIONS AND DECISIONS, ESPECIALLY AS THEY IMPACT THOSE WHO ARE POOR AND VULNERABLE.
The Social Justice Committee of St Andrews Cathedral would encourage parishioners to commit to this pledge and also create events where we as a parish can carry out actions like clean up campaigns to protect and care for our environment. We also need to protect and defend the Great Lakes and the water resources in the larger environment as a way to carry out the Saint Francis Pledge.
